Hamish Thomson - Composer
Hamish Thomson is an award winning songwriter, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Vancouver, B.C.
Hamish started his music career as a drummer in bands and after spending years performing, touring and in the studio as a session player, he branched out from behind the kit to explore his passion for song writing and music production .
Fresh out of music school, Hamish co-founded the Vancouver based power trio, Big Tall Garden playing over 200 shows with them. In the year 2000, he began experimental recording sessions under the moniker "The Hermit" producing ambient electronic music with live instruments which led to the creation of his debut album “Flying out of Solitude”. A successful independent release led to multiple West Coast Music Award nominations and a label deal with Nettwerk Records.
On the 2005 follow-up Wonderment, Thomson once again acted as producer, but this time captured the essence of a diverse pool of musicians and vocalists including Frazey Ford (The Be Good Tanyas), Martina Sorbrara (Dragonette), C.R. Avery and Allison Shevernoha (Paper Moon). Wonderment was a success in Canada, garnering The Hermit an Indie Award for “Favourite Electronica Artist” at Canadian Music Week 2006 and a #1 chart placing on Bravo TV’s Video Countdown with the song “Sir Real”. More recently, Hamish is half of the Vancouver based duo, onelight that has recently released its debut record and have since toured the globe with dates in places from India to New York.
As a composer for tv/film, Hamish's music can be heard on the feature film Grand Unified Theory and TV shows such as CONTINUUM, MOTIVE, BITTEN, ARCTIC AIR and BLOOD TIES.
As a producer and session player Hamish has been involved in well over 40 albums and has worked with an excellent roster of producers and mixers around including Mike Fraser (Franz Ferdinand, AC/DC, Metallic), Howard Redikopp (Mother Mother, Tegan and Sara, The New Pornographers), Garth Richardson (Rage against the Machine), Krish Sharma (The Rolling Stones) and Mike Rogerson (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls).
His love of music is infectious and he believes in capturing that moment of spontaneous magic.
